Learn Thai Vowels: Free Interactive Flashcards with Sound

2 min read

Thai has 32 vowel sounds, and they can sit before, after, above or below a consonant. That’s why they can look confusing at first. These free interactive flashcards help you learn every vowel step by step, with example words, pictures and sound.

How to read the cards

On each card, the grey อ is only a placeholder that shows where the consonant goes. The coloured part is the vowel. For example, in อิ the vowel is the small mark on top, and in เอ the vowel is the part in front.

The cards are grouped by colour:

  • 🟣 Short vowels (สระเสียงสั้น): say these quickly and cut the sound short.

  • 🟢 Long vowels (สระเสียงยาว): hold the sound a little longer.

  • 🟠 Special vowels (สระเกิน): these already include an extra sound, like -am, -ai or -ao.

Short and long vowels come in pairs. Card 1 in Short (อะ a) matches card 1 in Long (อา aa), card 2 (อิ i) matches card 2 (อี ii), and so on.

How to use the flashcards

  1. Tap or click a card to flip it.

  2. On the back you’ll see the vowel’s sound, an example word, its phonetic spelling and its meaning in English.

  3. You’ll also hear the vowel and the example word read aloud.

  4. Tap again to flip it back.

Tips for learning

  • Learn in pairs. Practise each short vowel together with its long partner (อะ – อา, อิ – อี). Length changes meaning in Thai!

  • Watch the doubled letters. In the phonetics, long vowels are written with double letters: a → aa, i → ii.

  • Say it out loud. Repeat the example word after the audio, then try making the sound with other consonants.

  • Don’t worry about the rare ones. A few vowels, such as เอือะ, ฦ and ฦๅ, are almost never used today. It’s good to recognise them, but focus on the common ones first.

Can’t hear the sound?

Don’t worry if you can’t hear the audio. The phonetic spelling on the back of each card shows you how to say each vowel. The audio uses your device’s built-in Thai voice. If it doesn’t work, check your volume, try Chrome or Safari, or add Thai as a speech language in your device settings.
